Rugby-Ulster and Clermont through to Heineken Cup semis

Ulster and Clermont Auvergne brought their very best away form to the Heineken Cup quarter-finals on Sunday to set up last four clashes against outsiders Edinburgh and holders Leinster respectively. Ulster prevailed 22-16 in a brutal encounter at Munster’s Thomond Park while Clermont, at English champions Saracens’ Vicarage Road home, strangled the life out of their opponents for a 22-3 win. Former champions Ulster’s flying start, thanks largely to three huge and deadly accurate penalties from his own half by South African scrumhalf Ruan Pienaar, gave them a 16-0 lead after 19 minutes to quieten the raucous Munster home support

Rugby: Small change in athletes evident

There are exceptions, a few jumbo athletes charging on strong, but 2012 has so far largely seen the return to prominence of the skinny man. Andre Taylor, Ben Smith, Aaron Smith, Aaron Cruden, Cory Jane and Tim Nanai-Williams must all be in the frame for All Black selection but, in relative terms, all would be considered the rugby equivalent of hand luggage. Taylor is 90kg, Ben Smith is 85kg, Nanai-Williams 88kg and Jane 85kg – considerably lighter than other back three weapons such as Digby Ioane (98kg), Frans Steyn (101kg) and George North (109kg)

A novel experience for Auckland first XV defending champions St Kentigern College last week could become a trend after the school was invited to play the curtain-raiser ahead of the Blues-Rebels match in Melbourne on Thursday. It is believed to be the first time a first XV has toured overseas as a Super Rugby supporting act. St Kentigern beat the Victoria under-18 state side 35-17
