In early June, Israel was invited to play in the qualifying round of the 2013 World Baseball Classic for the first time. The tournament is expanding from 16 to 28 teams, with countries like Brazil and the United Kingdom also joining the qualifying stage for the first time, and the Israel Baseball Association hopes that participation in such a prestigious competition will have a snowballing effect on the sport in Israel
New Pistons owner lets CEO Ostfield go (AP)
DETROIT (AP)—Detroit Pistons CEO Alan Ostfield has been fired by the team’s new ownership. Ostfield became president and CEO of both the Pistons and Palace Sports & Entertainment last year. The team was purchased about a month ago by Platinum Equity chairman Tom Gores in a deal that included Palace Sports

SAN JOSE, Calif. – San Francisco 49ers tight end Vernon Davis believes the NFL lockout has been good for Alex Smith but he said the veteran quarterback is “on his last straw” with the team. Taking a break from an informal workout at San Jose State on Thursday, Davis repeatedly praised Smith, whom he says has matured this offseason.
House exercises option to stay with Heat (AP)
MIAMI (AP)—Miami Heat reserve guard Eddie House(notes) has decided to exercise the option clause in his contract, and he’ll be back with the team next season. House’s decision was confirmed Thursday by the team. House, who could have become a free agent, is now under contract for $1.4 million for next year.
Official: Hamburg sign Chelsea defender Jeffrey Bruma on loan (Goal.com)
Chelsea has announced that it loaned out defender Jeffrey Bruma to Hamburg for the 2011-12 season. The Dutch defender will help fill the void created by Joris Mathijsen’s departure from Hamburg to Malaga earlier in the summer for a reported fee of €2.5 million.
2,000 police on duty for Copa America opener (AP)
LA PLATA, Argentina (AP)—Security officials say 2,000 police have been assigned to Friday’s opening match of the Copa America between host Argentina and Bolivia. Ricardo Casal, security minister for the province of Buenos Aires, offered few other details about policing at the match. The match is not considered high-risk, although it comes less than a week after rioting broke out at River Plate’s Monumental Stadium in Buenos Aires following River’s demotion to the second division for the first time in its 110-year history

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP)—Germany reached the Women’s World Cup quarterfinals, beating Nigeria 1-0 Thursday when Simone Laudehr scored on a thunderous volley during a 54th-minute goalmouth scramble in a surprisingly tight game. Goalkeeper Nadine Angerer celebrated her 100th international appearance with a shutout. The host nation, which has won both its games, looked hardly convincing in the three-week tournament it is favored to win
